Yuri Uchiumi was born in Hokkaido, Japan and started dancing at the age of 5. She began formal dance study at Elmhurst Ballet School, UK in 1990 where she studied classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap and Spanish Dance. She subsequently trained at the Benesh Institute in London and graduated in 1997.
Yuri was invited to join English National Ballet as a Choreologist in 1998, and was promoted to Ballet Mistress in 2002. During her time at English National Ballet, she was responsible for rehearsing/coaching corps de ballet, soloists and principal dancers on daily basis, as well as working with a wide range of choreographers and directors on both new creations and restaging.
In 2010, Yuri became freelance Ballet Mistress/Repetiteur and has since worked with many companies internationally, mainly staging works choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan, Rudolph Nureyev, Derek Deane, Michael Corder and Mary Skeeping. Yuri has worked all over the world, restaging ballets at English National Ballet (London), Paris Opera Ballet (Paris), La Scala (Milan), Teatro San Carlo (Naples), American Ballet Theater (NY), Sarasota Ballet (FL), Pittsburgh Ballet Theater (PA), Czech National Ballet (Prague), Croatian National Ballet (Zagreb), Shanghai Ballet (Shanghai), Universal Ballet (Seoul), Noriko Kobayashi Ballet Theater (Tokyo), Queensland Ballet (Brisbane) and Stanislavsky Theatre (Moscow).
In addition, Yuri is a tutor for the Professional Award in Benesh Movement Notation programme.
